Possible Opponents for Louisville?

UofLFootball

So we all know Boise St. dropped off the away schedule for 2013 Louisville Football.  We also know that San Diego State is considering staying in the Mountain West as well & is currently slated as a home game for the University of Louisville next year.  I think it’s highly likely that these games are replaced from INSIDE the Big East given that this will affect several schools.  So I do expect an entirely re-worked 2013 Big East schedule from what we had seen previously.

BUT we have also heard several reports of ESPN trying to stage a game with the Cards and a top-level opponent.  While football scheduling is usually fluid until March (and in 2012 Temple was actually looking for a game as late as October for the 2012 season!) many teams already have their schedules set in stone for 2013.  Of course, with money, TV even those without space can re-work their slates for the right deal.  So I took it upon myself to research ALL of the teams NOT in the Big East for 2013 & NOT currently on Louisville OOC schedule to figure out what may happen.  You can see the results of that search below.

*It’s highly possible that I missed some match-ups that have been announced or cancelled.  I did this in one day. And there are 124 College Football teams*

But for now I think Arizona, BYU, CAL, North Carolina, Syracuse, and Wake Forest present the most enticing teams that currently don’t have a full slate of games in 2012.  I do find it interesting that both Georgia Tech & Clemson BOTH play TWO FCS opponents while there are so many schools looking for games.  PAC-12 & Big-12 schools only play 3 OOC games a year and that really does affect the pool of available quality teams quite a bit.

It’s also disconcerting seeing so much of the “Scheduling Around the Myth” phenomenon that goes on in college football.  While Louisville struggles to find teams to play, some of these traditional football powers set up 4 uninteresting and unchallenging games for their out of conference games.

The schools that I would consider “interesting” and could probably use some OOC improvements by adding Louisville in 2013 with just a little movement of their current OOC are as follows (in alphabetical order):

1) Alabama:  I see no reason why the program with 3 of the last 4 national titles needs to play both Georgia State & Chattanooga.

2) Baylor: Monroe, Buffalo, & SMU?  Really?

3) Boise St: Being in the MWC they need high rankings to crash the BCS. UT-Martin & Southern Miss won’t help that cause at all.

4) Clemson: Why play TWO FCS schools?  But Tigers do already have Georgia & South Carolina in addition to their ACC slate.

5) Florida State: Do play the Gators…..and then no one else outside of ACC.

6) Kansas State: North Dakota State, Lafayette, and UMass….Nuff said. But I’m not sure what they have returning from a great season.

7) LSU: Do play TCU in Jerry’s World already to open season along with SEC schedule. But don’t see what’s gained by UAB, Kent State, or Furman. LSU routinely schedules good OOC games so surprised by those other 3.

8) Nebraska:  The Big Ten really under-performed in 2012 (and lately). Cornhuskers are really sticking their necks out with Wyoming, Southern Miss, and South Dakota State on OOC. I do like the UCLA game. But move one of the above 3 and things get interesting.

9) NC State:  Probably not a ‘juicy’ game, but worth mentioning that the Wolfpack get healthy with LA Tech, Central Mich, East Carolina, and Richmond in 2013.

10) Ohio State:  I’m actually really embarrassed for Buckeye fans.  The Big Ten isn’t very good and then you play THAT OOC?  Sorry can’t take you seriously when Louisville  is 3 hours away and the last meeting Ohio State nearly went down thanks to a failed 2-point conversion. But keep talking down your nose to folks, the Cards will find you in a bowl one day. If Louisville could get games with Big Ten schools this wouldn’t be an issue for me, but the dodging that has gone on is just ridiculous. When you run from a whooping you’re awfully tired when it is time to take stand.

11) Oklahoma State: This is hard for them because of the Big 12′s 9-game slate. OSU has Miss State and two unexciting contests. But maybe that’s what they want.

12) Texas A&M: Manziel & Bridgewater would get RATINGS. And the Aggies have Rice, Sam Houston State, SMU, & UTEP. Probably needs an upgrade in OOC. But the SEC West is difficult enough.  I’m circling this one.

13) Vanderbilt: Not far and not a good OOC schedule at all. Not a big splash though.

14) West Virginia: That OOC….woof! But 9-game Big 12 schedule plays a part in that.
